Burlie
Janis, Jordan (holding Burlie) and Jay

Burlie gets a loving home - April 29th

Burlie is on his way to Tillsonburg Ontario to join the family of Janis, Jay and their son Jordan (14 yrs) along with dog Jesse and 2 cats. Burlie was quick to climb into Jordan's lap this morning, and showing his pleasure in Jordan's cuddles and rubs. Burlie went off happily on his new adventure.

He will be very happy in this new family I know but we are already missing him and his snuggles. Burlie will have a big fenced yard in which to play with Jordan and Jesse. They are a very nice, kind family who will continue to provide the care and nurturing that Burlie needs to be a healthy, happy pug.

Ready for your home and lap - March 24

The time has come to look for a permanent home for Burlie. He is a great little guy, very snuggly and quite handsome. He is a bit of a humper and gets a rather upset when his nails are trimmed so that is definitely a job for an experienced person(s). Beyond that Burlie is a terrific puggy and very loving. Burlie loves to sleep in the big bed with everyone else and cuddles close. He loves to go for walks and does his business quickly.

Burlie is down to 1/4 tablet of prednisone every other day. His food was changed to Innova Evo RF with a teaspoon of a canned food - also 100% meat ( wysong for instance) 2 x per day. It is readily available at most pet food stores. Burlie also needs to have eye drops every night for the rest of his life. Currently cyclosporin in an oil suspension from the vet. He is not bad to get the drops put in and his eyes are much less "gummy" since the drops were started.

The adoptor must be willing to continue with a completely grain free diet - whether kibble or a raw diet but with his history with the allergic reaction it would be best to continue with this type of diet. You also have to be careful with snacks as many of them have grains. Burlie loves the dried chicken strips and raw veggies as treats. I am hopeful I can get him off the prednisone completely with the change in diet but time will tell. It is a possiblity that he will need low levels of steroids long term but so far we have gone from 1 tablet to 1/4 every other day with no adverse effects post diet change.

Burlie loves to "talk" when he is feeling frisky and wanting to play a bit - he is a real little character. At 4 yrs he is neither a "crazy" puppy nor a senior. Burlie is in terrific shape and is a great deal of fun. He likes kids and other dogs but would be fine on his own as well.

Foster Update, March 10

Burlie is still doing well. He has not seen the vet in last 2 weeks. His allergies are still under control and we have cut him back to 1/2 prednisone pill every other day. Next week we go to 1/4. If that continues to be ok the next move will be no prednisone - so fingers crossed for Burlie. He continues to be on the Innova EVO and so far so good.

He is a friendly but not overly kissy fellow who gets quite excited whenever anyone comes home. He is very used to being an only pug and he would like to be dominant over Bugzy. They are getting along fine no fights so in the right situation there could be another dog but he would also be fine on his own. Burlie loves to cuddle and is extremely fond of my husband often choosing him over me for a cuddle.

Foster Update, Feb 22

Took Burlie to the vet tonight. Overall he is pretty healthy but he does have eye problems that will require drops. He does show some signs of allergy - dry, cracked paws and a red backside (for want of a better description). There is no scaring in his eyes but they have been a bit gooey so the vet did both tear tests and staining to check for bigger issues but its been caught in time. We are going to gradually wean him off the prednisone he has been on to see what happens and if we can figure out what the allergy may be. The vet would like to give him a chance on a different food and regime.

One more thing - a true Pug Burlie hates getting his nails trimmed - and will try to nip as a warning. It took 2 of us to hold him and block his access to the vet as she clipped his nails.

Foster Update, Feb. 21, 2007

Burlie is doing great. Still a bit nervous but is more comfortable each day - Burlie loves to play grabing a stuffed toy, shaking it fiercely and playing tug. He enjoys cuddling with my husband most of all and spends most evenings asleep on Dave's knee laid out on his back, little toes in the air snoring away happily.

Burlie is eating well and I have not seen any evidence of spots on him so to date the grain free food (EVO) seems to be agreeing with him. He is seeing our vet Thursday. Everyone is settling in and getting to know one another better. Burlie gives nice little kisses whenever he climbs on your knee. He is a terrific boy who has obviously been well loved.

He was happily gobbling up some baby carrots tonight for a snack. He loves his walks - Burlie is very eager whenever anyone heads outside hoping for a stroll. Overall Burlie is settling in nicely.

Introduction, Feb. 18, 2007

Burlie is a 4 year old male who is dearly loved by his owner. However, in October, 2006 he suddenly developed an allergy which resulted in bumps and lumps over his body. He went through a cycle of consultations, diagnosis and treatments. Although under control, the owner could not keep up the continuing medical expense to keep get rid of the allergies.

We will be having a medical assessment done on Burlie's current condition and will provide an update on this and his behaviour and some photos in a few days.
