Dave - 1 year old male Pug/Jack Russell mix |

Adopter Update, August 13, 2009 During their first afternoon together Pugsley gave Dave a tour of the yard and they hung out in the garden for a while and Pugsley sniffed his ear as they got to know each other. They were also very busy wrestling and playing with toys. Somewhere in there Emily managed to get some training time in with Dave. I ended up feeling like I was being the "mean mom" breaking up the sleepover party because they were still playing at 11pm! Poor Dave wanted to rest and so went happily into his crate which was in the X-Pen. Dave and Pugsley did really well overnight the first night. I heard them at 6am the next morning which I thought was great for the first night ... otherwise nothing overnight and no problems with Dave letting us know when he had to go outside! I left them together in the pen during the day the next day with just their beds (no crate) and other than a few strewn blankets they were fine when we got home! (Looked like another party during the day!) We took them to soccer the next evening and they were a hit with all the kids! Dave is walking very well next to Pugsley (she likes to be on the right side of him!) and it is amazing to see how they interact! Dave was a little less "hyper" tonight and you weren't kidding with the meals!! 10 seconds flat to finish - he's like a vacuum and doesn't even chew! I feel like I'm living the "Adventures of Dave and Pugsley" - never a dull moment! Emily and Andrew say "Super Dave" really is a "Super Dog". He is smart, cool, awesome, fun to play with, a great big brother for Pugsley and, we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE him a lot! |
Dave is an extremely happy, energetic and playful one year old Pug/Jack Russell Terrier cross. In typical Pug fashion, Dave is very friendly with people and other dogs and he is always ready to eat. In typical Jack Russell Terrier fashion, Dave is always ready to play, jump and run. Dave absolutely loves to play fetch with a ball or kong and he loves running at top speed around the yard with his foster brothers. Dave really needs people committed to exercising and playing with him and would do well with another young dog who can match his energy level. Dave should not go to a home with children because he will grab food & toys from their hands and he is not gentle when taking treats offered by hand. Dave is a real sweetheart and loves to be with his people but he isn’t overly cuddly. Dave doesn’t like to be picked up or held and will struggle strenuously to be put down/let go. Dave is not frightened by sounds such as vacuums, thunder, etc. However, he is very vocal and will bark at anything he finds interesting such as: his toys, people and dogs walking by the house, doorbells, animals on TV, the refrigerator when it makes funny sounds, people whose arms are too tired to throw the ball any longer, etc. Dave would not be welcome in an apartment/condo/semi-detached home because of his barking. Dave is house-broken and will ask to go out but he's easily distracted outside and may forget to get the job done if he’s not reminded which could result in an accident inside. |
Foster Update - June 15 I've had the immense pleasure of looking after Dave while his foster folks went on vacation. He is a true delight. He has the cuddly, warm nature of the the pug and the exuberance on that Jack Russell. He loves to run after his kong, watching it bounce around, catching it and running back to dropping it at your feet. He runs alongside the big retrievers and doodles, yet will happily initiate play with the smaller dogs in the dog park. And when the day is over he will wiggle in next to your thigh, place his chin on your lap and soon start his running dreams.Dave was at the Pugalug booth at Woofstock and Sunday and charmed everyone who saw him. Everyone remarked on how cute he was. |
Vet Update - May 26 It turns out that when the vet went to implant the microchip - Dave already had one. That was the first of a couple of surprises from Super Dave.Poor little Dave's surgery was complicated and took twice as long as Dr. Z expected. The explanation was pretty technical but I'll do my best to describe the gist of it. The testicle that had descended into the scrotum was dealt with in the normal manner. For the testis that had not descended, Dr. Z started with an incision in the groin area but the testis was not there as we had hoped. That meant an incision into the abdomin was required. What complicated things further is the cord/connective tissue that would normally draw the testis down into the scrotum was absolutely taut within Dave's abdomen. Dr. Z said he's never seen this in his 28 years of experience. Normally there would be slack and he would use this cord to tie off the blood vessels and such before removing the testis in order to minimize the use of foreign material. In this case, with no slack to with Dr. Z had to use sutures to tie off the blood vessels. The end result is that dear little Dave has three incisions to work on healing and the final bill was just over a thousand dollars. The poor little baby is completely confused this morning. Between the big plastic thing stuck around his head and feeling sore all over, he's just not sure what to do with himself :( |
Foster Update - May 25 Dave saw the vet for his initial exam on Friday. Dave was friendly with everyone he met but pretty jumpy whenever someone approached him with something in their hand. He is wary and tries to get away. This will be something to work on in the coming weeks. He weighed in at 15.2 lbs and his heartworm test was negative. I'm waiting on the results of the rest of the blood work and the fecal test. Dave's eyes, ears, knees and heart were all good. The not so good news is that I noticed a tiny bug on the examination table which the vet confirmed was a very small flea. She couldn't find any signs of flea dirt on Dave but we've started him and the rest of my guys on their Revolution early, just in case. Dave goes in today, May 25, for his neuter surgery |

Foster Update - April 28 (eats) FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET! (less than 10 seconds to finish off a meal)(jaw) MORE POWERFUL THAN A LOCOMOTIVE! (he's been lifted off the ground when he won't let go of a tug toy) ABLE TO LEAP TALL BUILDINGS IN A SINGLE BOUND! (actually, he went from the floor, over an end table, bounced off my shoulder then onto the couch beside me) IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, IT'S SUPER DAVE!!!! It's been a while since I've had a four legged youngster in my home and Dave is quite a character. He loves my pugs (he's growing on them) and my kids. Dave and my 3 year old son are quite the 'dynamic duo'. Dave enjoys his walks, rides in the car and hasn't had any accidents in the house so far (can't say the same for the 3 year old). Dave will be scheduled for his neuter in the very near future. |

Introduction - April 25 Dave is a energetic but gentle dog who is an owner surrender. Dave was well loved but his previous owner obtained a new job that required extensive travel. We were contacted and asked to find Dave a good home. He is still intact so a neutering will be arranged, once he has settled in. |
