Jake - 6 months - Pug Mix

Jake is bouncing to his new home

Jake has found the perfect furever home. I couldn’t be happier that he is joining Brianne, Mary, Brian and Heather (missing from the picture) as a member of their family. I will miss the little guy but I am confident he is on the way to having the wonderful life he so deserves.

Requirements

Jake is ready to find a permanent loving home. He is recovering well from his neuter and will be having his last vaccines soon.

Jake is an active puppy that will need a home that is willing to spend time with him and makes sure he gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. He is very friendly and needs to be around people. He plays with my dog but prefers to be with me. While on a walk he will go towards any person passing by for attention. He is very friendly and will lick anyone that stops for him. He gets very excited when he sees you after being apart and will jump around a lot, which is why I think he would do best in a home with children over 8. He does settle down in a couple of minutes though. Jake will cry, bark and howl when left alone and can be very physical when upset. He will jump at what ever is keeping him apart from what he wants (i.e. baby gate, door). He no longer does this at my place but whoever adopts Jake needs to know that, initially, when left alone he will be quite upset.

Jake has springs for legs and can jump about 3 feet. He can also climb baby gates and fences and will if there is something he wants on the other side. He has to be on-leash in my yard because he can climb the fence. He is also thin and can squeeze between the bars. His new owners will have to make sure he can't get out, or keep him on a leash.

Jake needs some obedience training but is quite smart and willing to learn. He is not a marker but likes to hump other dogs a lot. He will stop when you tell him but is back at it in seconds. He was very bad with this when he first got here but has not done it in a couple of days with my dog. It is likely this is just his age. He eats fast and will try to take food from my dog but if told "no" he won’t take it. I can take treats and food away from him but he has growled at my dog when he has a bone.

Jake is not house-trained. He can go 8 hours overnight but not the whole day when I am at work. He has had accidents in the house but is ok if taken out regularly (every 3-4 hours). He will go outside but will not let you know he has to go out.

Jake is a good boy looking for a home that will help him become a great boy.

Update - March 22

It has been a just a week now and Jake is starting to settle in. He is still crying when he is first put to bed or when I leave for work but it is now only for about a half an hour. I have music playing for him and I am not sure if that helps but it was worth a try. He can be very physical when he is upset, jumping around and leaping at the gate, so he has a very tall gate that he cant jump over or knock down. He definitely has the Pug Velcro thing. He follows me everywhere and cried when I took a shower the first couple of days but once he realized he could push the curtain back and find me, he was fine. He likes to be on the couch with me but is also fine on another chair and doesnt have to sit right on me.

Jake went to the vet on Friday and is in great health. He got his rabies shot and had a full check up. He was super well behaved and kissed the vet many times. He is scheduled for his neuter in about a week. Jake is a very active guy and needs a lot of exercise; luckily he and my dog play constantly and tire each other out. He loves to go for walks and is pretty good on the coupler. I havent tried him on a leash alone but will soon. He is very alert and interested in people passing by. He doesnt bark when on the leash but sometimes will when he is in the yard. He likes other dogs but is more inclined to people.

Jake does not mouth things but he does like to chew. He can finish a bone in no time. He can also be a little possessive and has growled at my girl a couple of times but he is fine when I take his bone away from him. Not an excuse but my dog can be quite annoying with him when he has something she wants, even if she has the exact same thing. He loves treats and learns very fast what he needs to do to get one. He knows to sit and that he gets a treat when he does his business outside. Jake is not house-trained and cant hold it all day when I am at work. Strangely, he uses the bathtub to potty. He did that from the first day and continues to, which makes clean up a breeze.

He is a very sweet guy who really wants to please people. He loves and needs a fair amount of attention. I think he is very smart and would do well in obedience classes. He is a good boy and once he is neutered and learns some more of the rules, he will be a great dog.

Update - March 16

Jake is a sweet Pug \JRT cross. He is very active and very much like the 6 month old puppy he is. He had a great first day playing with my girl, non-stop. He is very friendly and loves to be around people and other dogs. He ate his dinner and had a short nap on the couch. Overnight was rougher on him. He was in his kennel in the bathroom and cried a lot. Apparently, he also cried when I was at work.

He is still adjusting and this is all very new to him, so Ill provide more information on his personality as he settles in. He is very striking looking; tall and thin with a soft apricot coloured coat. He had 2 accidents in the house but we are working on that. He seems to be quite smart and very eager to please.

He already knows to sit for a treat. He will hopefully be going to the vet for his first check up and vaccines on Friday and he will likely go in for his neutering a couple of weeks after that.

Introduction - March 15

Little Jake has just been transported by our volunteers to his new, foster home. He is 1/4 Jack Russel Terrier and 3/4 Pug. His previous owner left the country and the person who was looking after him, gave us a call and asked if we would find him a new, forever home.

So we look forward to the stories and photos from his foster mom.
