Jasper - 3.5 year old fawn male

Adopter Update - December 20, 2009

We just wanted to let you know how well Jasper is doing. Oh my gosh, he is just a pure delight and it is rare that a night goes by without John or I saying, "Aren't we just so lucky to have him? We just could never have wished for a more perfect little boy". Abbee, Arawyn and Jasper are wonderful siblings and they all just love each other and we LOVE them. They make us laugh all the time.

Thank-you for bringing Jasper to us and letting him be a part of our family. We truly could not love him more.

Adopter Update - June 1

Well, we've had our little boy for 1 week now and it honestly feels like he has always been here. He is such a joy and really completes our family. There is nothing he likes more then his walks each day (well maybe his food). He and Abbee are getting along famously and love to frolic and play both outside and inside. During the day they have each found their own resting spots but in the evening they always seem to cuddle together. We believe our daughter thinks she's in heaven now with 2 furry siblings. She adores them and will giggle everytime they are face to face.

We are looking forward to a summer of many laughs and adventures. We truely feel blessed,

Hugs and licks, John, Laura, Abbee, Arawyn and Jasper

Jasper's new home - May 24

Jasper was zooming around the back yard when I left him today with his new family. He has an energetic 6 year old pug sister - Abbee - that was playing happily with during both the home visit and adoption. And he has a little human sister that he gave kisses on the cheek to. And he was eyeing the dogs in the off-leash park across the street. So Mr. Sociable is going to have his dance card full for at least the next year.

John and Laura will continue to give Jasper the love and guidance he needs in life.

Requirements

Jasper’s neutering surgery went well, is in good, healthy condition so we are now accepting applications for his adoption.

He is a quiet, little pug - does not bark much. When he is in his crate he makes these wonderful little noises that sound like a Star Wars creature. It will make you laugh. Although he is good in a crate, he loves to be with you either in the car or in the house.

Although Jasper loves to play with other dogs, his personality leans more to being in a single dog household. He will follow you around and find a place close to you to sleep. When he is in the park with other dogs, Jasper is friendly and easy going. He will initiate play with a dog his own size and play the whole time. Care must be taken if Jasper is off leash as he will go running toward another dog he sees. His recall is getting better and the new owner should continue to work on that with positive treat training.

He is not overly affectionate with new people. He needs to get to know the human before he opens up to affection. Once he does, he will push his little body into you and rub against you. He also will give licks and kisses on the cheek and ear lobe. In the evening he prefers to sleep on the dog bed by your feet.

Jasper is on Orijen kibble that he gets in the morning and evening. He also gets a tablespoon of canned wet food with his evening kibble.

Update - May 1

Japser had a second vet visit on the 28th to have his blood and fecal tests. Everything came back okay so he will be going in on May 13th to have his neutering. He will then be ready for adoption. Dr. Usher praised he calm behavior as the blood was drawn - such a good boy at the vets.

Jasper has settled into the routine quite well. He enjoys playing with the other small dogs in the park. He manages to find the ones with the most energy and happily bounce around each other. When it's time to go I ususally have to put the leash on him and almost drag him away - that's how much fun he has. It's the only time he does not respond when I call him to come - but that can be worked on in the future.

I have been getting him use to sleeping in the crate at night every third day. He now settles down and falls asleep almost immediately. His favourite spot on the big bed is to be curled up against the backs of my legs. He will work his way down to the end of the bed during the night where he can stretch out and snore.

Update - April 13

Well, little Jasper did, not one, but TWO shifts at the All About Pets show this past weekend. And there was one little tired pug at the end of it all. But he did so well, greeting the crowds of people, letting the children pet him (and giving him pieces of liver treats for sitting on command.

And he was very friendly with the various therapy dogs in the booth next door He was the perfect rescue pug ambassador. So, I'm happy to report that he is very sociable but does not get overly excited when new and strange circumstances are happening around him. He trusts that his human companion will be looking out for him.

Jasper goes in this week for his booster shot, blood and fecal tests. I'll have a vet report at the end of the week.

Update - April 6

Jasper's vet visit went very well. He sat quietly (well, except for the heavy snoring) while Dr. Usher checked out the little guy. Everything is okee-dokey. He weighs 19 lbs - which accounts for his energy level and love of walks.

However, they contacted his first vet and it turns out Jasper was never vaccinated there. So we have to delay his neutering until after the vaccinations have settled into his system. So I'll be getting my ear lobes licked a little longer. He had no reaction to the vaccine and is now sleeping soundly beside me. He will be getting blood work and fecal test done on April 28th We plan to have the neutering done mid-May

Meanwhile, Jasper has settled into the routine of the household. There have been no integration problems with Odin, Dublin or Dante. He likes to sleep on an old yoga mat I have (maybe he was a yogi in a past life). He initiates play with the smaller dogs in the dog park but tends to shy away from the larger ones. When he is not playing with another dog, he will go up to the other dog owners in the park and quiety greet them. He does not jump up on people (unlike some pugs who will remain nameless ;>

He relishes his breakfast and dinner. He's getting Orijen. He did have some gas at first as his digestive system adjusted to the new, grain free food. He does not care for the cookies I give the other guys but loves the dried liver treats. I'm using these to work on his recall in the park (which is getting much better). And I picked up some brisket and marrow bones for him to try. He gave the bone one sniff and then hauled the bone to his yoga mat and stayed with it the whole night. So he'll be getting those regularly as we work some of the tarter off.

All in all he is a wonderful, happy little pug who will make a loving companion to someone when he is ready to be adopted.

Update - March 31

Jasper has settled comfortably into our routine. He has a lovely little way of saying "I Love You". He jumps up on to my lap, rests his paws on my chest, bends down and gives me a little lick on the ear lobe. It is just the endearment one needs at the end of a work day to put a smile on your face and know everything alright in the pug world.

Socially, Jasper is a dream pug. I took Jasper to Pugsley's 16th Birthday. It was held at Doggie Central. When I got there, I unleashed Jasper and away he went to greet both puggies and humans alike. I rarely saw him he was having such a good time. Occasionally he would stop by, sniff my pant leg to be reassured I was still around, and then off to see his new friends. People remarked on how sociable he was, like he had been coming to pugalug gatherings his whole life. I'll put up a couple of pics on the weekend

Jasper loves his walks. When I go for the leash, he is at my feet, spinning in excited circles. He stops long enough for me to put the harness on, then it's little hippty hops to the door. On the walk, he is out front, leading the pack, nose exploring his new neighbourhood. Once the excitement wears off, I will work on this heel.

At night, he first likes to bury his face into the comforter, eventually rolling on to his back for a belly rub. Then, when he is ready to sleep, he plops his backside along my thigh and is out until the morning.

He goes for his vet check up on Monday, April 5th. His neutering and micro chipping is scheduled for April 15th.

Introduction - March 28

And we celebrate Earth Hour with a new arrival - a delightful, earthy little pug named Jasper. He has an easy, energetic and playful personality. He is blind in one eye due to an old eye injury that was not properly taken care of. The eye vet has said the other eye is in tip top shape. And his general health appears to also be very good.

He is a little anxious right now, as he was dearly loved by his owner. A change in life circumstances of the owner has meant he has had to come into our care.

He stood watching in the park at first as Dante, Dublin and Odin played. But after awhile he started to join in. And he met our neighbour's female pug Tommie in the back yard.
