Princess, adopted October 28, 2006

Princess seems to be settling in remarkably! I have a sofa and a loveseat in my living room, and Her Majesty has decided that the loveseat is her throne for now. Having said that, at one point this evening, I was sitting on the sofa watching tv, and she trotted over, jumped up, crawled into my lap, rolled over onto her back, and promptly presented the royal belly for me to rub! Needless to say, I was surprised, but honoured to oblige!

There's been no grumbling at the door at all. We've gone on three walks, and I've gotten two "good pee!"s. Coming home from the last walk, she remembered where we live, and turned into our walkway without my having to gently tug her! She hasn't eaten since we arrived, but she has had a fair bit of water, and one of her Pupperoni sticks.

My one cat, Sammy (black female, 9 yrs old), has been exploring, and gave Princess a good ol' smell while she slept. Princess tried once to make friends, but Sam made it clear that, while she's not looking for a fight, she's just not ready to be friends yet. Sam arched her back and ran for cover under the bed, leaving Princess with a somewhat puzzled expression on her adorable face. Willie (grey male, 8 yrs old) hasn't moved from the bedroom, but has watched Princess very closely when she's ventured in to say hello.

All in all, a great first day. As I type this, she's on her throne, snoozing away. I'll keep you updated on her progress! Thanks again, for everything. My neighbours have been making quite a fuss over her, so she's getting lots of attention everywhere we go.

Well, the time has finally come for Princess to find her forever home. This hefty highness has lost almost 10 pounds and was deemed fit enough to undergo spaying and micro chipping on Monday. All that's left is a week of recuperation and some very special household will receive its royal visitor.

Princess would be terrific in a lone dog family, but would manage in a multi-dog home, as she is very submissive. Unaccustomed as she was with dog food, she now is willing to eat the dry stuff, but the same food in another dog's bowl is more appetizing, and of course anything dropped on the floor is hers. She has no experience with cats, or little boys, but has learned to appreciate the 2 and 3-year-old girls on the street. With a gentle introduction, Princess would be able to get along with anyone and anything.

She is astoundingly affectionate, gives kisses on demand - if you are a chosen one - and has no greater pleasure that to cuddle on a lap and be stroked, so she should be in a home that has the time to give her the physical attention she craves. She has been left alone in the house for 6 or 7 hours a day during working hours, and managed to amuse herself, but beware, sufficient chew sticks, hoofs, and other toys would be required, or she'll find her own fun. An inquisitive girl, she would dearly love to pull out garbage to chew on if given the chance.

She has no health issues, but continued weight loss is still prescribed, and a reasonable diet and frequent walks will continue to shed the excess. Always eager to go on walks to smell stuff, with each pound she loses, Princess becomes more peppy, although she has never exhibited frolicking tendencies. She would rather sit with the humans and be pampered. This girl is fully housebroken, and needs regular, long walks to relieve herself, and only after a Thanksgiving Day treat, which was above her usual fare, had a poop accident.

Princess has a gorgeous face, soft fur, is sweet natured, and although reluctant to give her attention to just anyone, will be the most loyal, loving and attentive dog a master could hope for.

Princess, Foster Update Oct 7th

The Story of Princess and the Pee.

You may think you know this story of a travelling Princess who has a bad night’s sleep, but this is the story of a Pug Princess who travels in search of a different kind of comfortable location.

This little girl – and while she is still plump, she is to be commended for her weight loss – is so very well house trained that not only will she not soil her house, but she does not want to wet her back yard either. Four or five time a day, while participating in her exercise program, Princess scours the neighbourhood looking for just the right place to decorate with her golden dew. She eagerly sniffs and investigates for a possible location, turning her nose up at weed patches and posts that previously hosted her leavings, and undeterred by rain or dark, waits for the perfect spot. Because of her frequent and leisurely trots, Princess has made the intimate acquaintance with several little girls on the street who were very patient and gentle, and taught Princess that little girls aren’t quite the horrid little creatures of her first impression. Now Princess is happy to sit on command for treats, be petted and adored, or led in a royal procession up the sidewalk with her new friends. Even little boys are getting an sniff iwthout fear or barking.

On the home front, Princess is settling in and displaying great inquisitiveness. Any cupboard or door opened has to be thoroughly investigated. While not playing at the local dog park with the other pugs, now at least she watches the wildness. With her trimmer physique, Princess can now jump onto the master’s bed, and feels quite proud of her accomplishment. She takes her banishment to the floor with good grace, and sleeps, as quietly as a pug can, in her cushioned bed. She is even comfortable enough to not follow me around the house at my heels, now keeping an eye on me so she knows where I am.

Princess, Foster Update September 14th

Princess has managed the loss of her brother Tyson (through a happy adoption) with regal good grace. Once she realized she wasn’t missing out on a walk, she hopped on the couch and claimed it as hers exclusively, likewise the chewies, the dog bed, and all attention from humans. Life is good when you don’t have to wait your turn. Even the first night alone, she settled down after a few whimpers for attention. She obviously would be fine in a single dog home.

Princess has made her proclamation. After many audiences with young children she has decided she is afraid of them, and barks and hides behind whatever adult is near, preferably a female. In dog park she minds her own business and ignores the antics of those frolicy canines. It’s not that she is intimidated or hostile towards other dogs, they just are not in her social class.

Dog food still isn’t interesting to this royal diva, she licks around the dry food to get to the wet or rolled food, and only accepts a snack for sitting on demand with reluctance. She sniffs the air while the humans eat and casts woeful looks in a hinting manner, but has better manners than to beg. This, combined with her eagerness to go out for walks as many times a day as offered, has lead to more weight loss. She will likely be ready in October for spaying.

Princess, Foster Update September 3rd

Princess is having her time of the month – no quarter – no semi annual – (no delicate way to put it I guess) in heat, and seems to be suffering no ill effects, other than a mournful look when I put her bitchy breeches on her. She is losing weight at an appropriate rate, and was able to make it all around the spit today with only one rest. In a few months the Princess will have lost enough weight to be able to handle the surgery to spay her, and leave behind those annoying heats, and never have to bred.

Blanche brought her a new, more decorative harness, and she looks ever so feminine as she promenades around the block. She loves to sniff all the other canine activity still lingering on patches of grass and bushes, but still watches the other dogs in the park instead of joining the fun. Too dignified too join the ruckus, or maybe too portly. Unlike her extravagantly extroverted brother, she still hangs back when people stop to point out her beauty, but she is willing to be adored and petted. Having never been exposed to small children, she doesn’t know what to make of them and prefers the company of adults. But most of all Princess loves lying on the coach, head hanging off the edge and snoring ever so delicately.

Princess, Foster Update August 30th

Princess's vet check went well and she got a clean bill of health. The only outstanding issue was her weight - 15.6 Kgs. She was very well behaved at the vets. We have scheduled some more blood and other tests and will be working on bringing her weight down.

"Princess is aptly named, for beneath her portly exterior is a demur, elicate fawn female who comports herself with quiet dignity. Her laboured breathing is like the Russian princess Anastasia, as portrayed in the Ingrid Bergman movie who coughed when she was nervous. Now that's she's adjusted to her new household, she only pants when over exerted. She has a well developed bust line, or rather several sets of bust lines, and while she has reportedly never been bred, her upcoming vet visit will unmask her maidenly condition.

Princess hangs back and lets her brother Tyson take the lead in many things, and she waits patiently for attention to be given. She needed to be wooed to nibble on food, venture outdoors, and even pee. This gentle girl doesn't seem to know her name or respond to any commands, but that may just be because we aren't using the language of her former masters. Her coat is silky, her ears clean and her multi-wrinkled face holds clear brown eyes that ask for love and attention. Making he look like the princess in the recent Star Wars movie, she has a tiny discolouration on her lower lip that gives the impression of wearing a dab of lipstick.

She would prefer to stay flopped on the cool floor, but is game to go on walks rather than be left behind, and while the spirit is willing, her current out-of-shape status leaves her taking her rest after a few blocks. With healthy food and ever-lengthening walks it won't be too long before this royal highness will be able to wear a sparkly pink tutu and tiara to let everyone know she is a princess.

Once she has lost enough weight to be neutered, Princess will be a delightful addition to any family who can lavish her with the love and attention due a pug of her royal station."

Princess, Introduction, August 24th

Princess is a 4 year old fawn female. She is quite overweight and cannot handle much of a walk without breathing and panting heavily. We will be working on a weight loss program that will most likely continue when she is adopted.

She will be going for her vet checkup on August 28th.
