At the Rainbow Bridge

May 27 2006 - June 24 2019

It is so quiet here now. Stuart and Lorna worked together, she was the eyes and ears and Stuart the calm gentle energy. Now I wake to his gentle snores instead of her little foot on my neck and her chubby little hip check to the head.

These past two weeks so many neighbours and even strangers are stopping to talk to me and ask where my sassy little girl has gone.

It turns out she made fans wherever she went. There are folks I have never met that have told me they always enjoyed seeing her, leading Stuart and I on our walks. Even from afar it was obvious to them that she was in charge.

Hearing this is comforting and always makes me laugh, even though my heart is broken. I miss her giant personality terribly but am so grateful that she was the boss of me.

Lorna was surrendered to Pugalug in 2008. She was very pregnant. After giving birth to 7 wiggly black pug puppies she came to me as a foster and immediately made herself at home. She was so drained from her babies and had some real mobility issues. Along with Blanche and her girl Maude, we made several weekly trips to physiotherapy with Tania at Canine Wellness, where Lorna swam to regain some muscle in her back end. Thankfully she loved the water. I worked at home and was able to take Lorna for lots of short walks that were almost painful to watch, she was so wobbly, but soon she began to straighten up and even, some months later, run! I will never forget the day she suddenly joined the circle of big dogs running at the park, barking and yipping she kept up (sort of) and always got lots of laughs.

That bossy and vocal Lorna became the norm and years went by with lots of other fosters--Lorna (along with Stuart) became good hosts and Lorna became an effective ambassador for our rescue.

Her bossy but charming insistence on being adored by everyone she met, was both hilarious and kind of handy. People were always captivated by her and would stop and take her photo or stay for a chat and a cuddle with her. People were always curious about her legs and hips and the funny way she would flop down to sit. I would use this opportunity to warn about irresponsible breeding, reputable breeders and rescue, kijiji etc... Lorna was pretty happy to hold peoples' attention until I finished my rant. I like to think she knew that she was helping.

I'm certain she knew she was adored.
