360 pugs rescued since October, 2005
Marty is a special pug. He was born with a neurological condition where his brain doesn't send the appropriate messages to his hind end so he has no control over his back legs. This results in lack of coordination and some incontinence. Despite these hurdles, Marty is bright in spirit and apparently free of pain. He has done exceptionally well in his foster home, where his foster mom has the experience to deal with his medical issues. He loves his neck massages and playing with his pug sister with whom he has really bonded. Since his condition will never get better, we decided not to mess with success and let him stay where he is clearly cherished and happy. Congratulations, little fellow, on finding your perfect furever home.
Marty went for his first vet visit to get the once over and bloodwork. It was suspected by the first vet he saw for his puppy shots that he may possibly have hydrocephalus. The vet ruled that out and diagnosed possibly cerebellar hypoplasia. Marty may also have congenital spine disease as he has kyphosis. He also has retained baby teeth and the adult teeth are growing out of the roof of his mouth. The bloodwork came back excellent so Marty went in for his neuter and to have teeth removed. He also had an xray to assess further joint issues.
After Marty returned from having his teeth removed, in true pug fashion he ate his dinner with gusto! Xrays show spine is normal but there is premature closing of the ulnar growth plate in the front legs and that's was caused his feet to be out turned. He's not in any pain and the vet said it really confirms that Marty's issue is neurological and not physical. His brain doesn't know what his legs are doing and he won't be fully housebroken as he's not aware of when he's pooping. He remains clean at night and has graduated to the big bed.
He is a happy little boy and isn't in any pain. He will never be a normal pug but also won't get any worse. He is what he is and is not aware that he's different. Marty has really bonded with the resident pugs and has been welcomed into the pug pile.
Marty is an 11-month old intact little boy that was surrendered because he needed more care than the owner was able to provide.
Marty's front feet are splayed to the side and he has neurological issues that cause him to have problems with his back legs. He is a very sweet boy and still very much a puppy. He walks like a dog wearing boots for the first time.
Marty does have the odd accident as he's not quite sure what his back end is doing. He has settled into foster care and has to my surprise even managed to go up and down the deck stairs.
Marty will be going to get checked over by the vet.
