Almost eight weeks ago, Rupert, aka Rupes, left his loving foster family and came to live with us - his human mom and pug brother. He was fairly tentative about his new home at first, barked at people at the park, and whoever came to visit, but he settled in very quickly and now mostly barks at our nextdoor neighbours, their cat, and the cat's outdoor food dish. He gets very excited when he sees squirrels, and loves to chase them, running and squealing, but thankfully, never catching them. I have never seen a dog get so excited as Rupert does when I come home, even if I've only been out of the house for half an hour!
Rupert has made many new dog and human friends in the neighbourhood and at the doggie daycare that he and Marvin go to once a week. Our good friends and neighbours, and their adorable pug have become a second family for Rupes. Our neighbour walks the three pugs most mornings after Rupert and his pug brother's early morning walk, and his wife has them over for snuggle time on the couch if I have to go out in the evening. His grandmother comes over one afternoon a week to read to the pugs, and hang out with them in the garden. And at least once a week, both pugs go on the subway to a big park to roam in the woods and sniff new friends.
Rupert and his pug brother have loved each other from the start. They explore the backyard together several times a day, walk together, curl up on the big bed together at night, and have never been separated from each other since the day Rupes arrived, including going to each other's vet appointments. Rupert had his first check up with his new vet, and apart from some skin irritation, which an antifungal shampoo took care of, he got a clean bill of health.
Rupert loves watermelon, bananas and chicken and has a healthy appetite, but then again he is a pug! He is an absolutely adorable little guy and we love him to bits. It's getting harder by the day to remember when he wasn't part of our family. Thanks so much to his foster mom and all the kind people at Pugalug for bringing Rupert into our lives.
Rupert the Lovebug is ready for his new home. He went to his last vet visit and received a clean bill of health (and a few "is he up for adoption yet?" inquiries we have to add!). He is a charmer, and an energetic, loving dog.
Rupert does great in a home with other animals (he currently resides with cats, dogs, and rodents). The foster home has one cat that bugs Rupert and he will then chase that cat, but he gets along with the other foster cats.
Rupert is let out every four to five hours for pee breaks. He has not had any accidents or marking in his foster home. He had been returned for marking in his previous home, but this has not happened at all in his foster home.
Rupert can be anxious when left alone. We are working on some separation anxiety issues. He does not damage the home or have accidents inside, but we did discover that he paces and whines a bit when his main "person' was gone. We have been working on creating a calm zone for him and this training should continue in his new home. For this reason he would do best in a home with older kids, and with other dogs.
He will give an initial bark at visitors he does not know. He can be a bit anxious around men, but after a few minutes calms down.
Rupert is a very patient well-mannered pug. He wins over everyone with his charm and cuteness. EVERYONE LOVES RUPERT. EVERYONE! He has won over non-dog people, dogs that hate dogs, cats that hate dogs and one of his best friends is a rat. EVERYONE LOVES RUPERT.
Rupert enjoys going on walks and other adventures, and has great recall.
He loves to eat, play, and sleep in the company of others and does not like to be shut out of rooms, so a restrictive environment will not be good for him. Rupert is great at learning basic commands and aims to please. He is patient when other dogs are playing with a toy that he wants and shows no food aggression if other dogs are eating around him. Overall he is a wonderful little man.
Rupert is really smart and does not have an aggressive bone in his body. He loves to meet new animals and people, but can be shy and timid in new environments, turning to his primary person for comfort.
He loves to sleep on laps and in the bed with his family, at night.
Rupert is a gentle, loving dog that will make an amazing addition to any patient, gentle, loving family. He's got a big heart and is not afraid to share it!
Rupert had a wonderful long weekend earlier this month and has been enjoying life lounging on the porch (in the shade of course). However, even when relaxing, Rupert continues to be the life of the party (aka the happy goof in his foster home). He loves on everyone and doesn't quite understand when a new animal friend is less than thrilled about meeting him. He assumes that everyone shares his zest for life. Rupert really does love everything. He loves food, loves toys, loves walk...There definitely is a theme.
Everywhere his foster family goes, they continue to be asked: WHY HAVEN'T YOU ADOPTED HIM YET!!! But they know that the perfect family is still out there looking for him. One that share his love affair with life and will commit to him for the rest of his as well!
June with Rupert has been a joy. The little man is becoming more of a character every day. He continues to love car rides and pays attention to EVERYTHING! When going on an adventure, you have to pay attention to him because, although his recall is great, his attention to details often makes him too distracted to respond to his name. He is not trying to ignore you, he is just really taking it all in! It's great to watch and an amazing reminder to "be present!!!
Rupert has also developed a habit of grabbing a flip flop or toy and running around like mad when his foster mom comes into the house. He is so excited and he just REALLY needs to show it. Bedtime usually ends with Rupert settling on the bed, playing with a toy for ten minutes, then falling asleep. He rarely plays with toys during the day but to Rupert, bedtime is PLAY TIME!
We continue to investigate a persistent UTI issue, and the clinic continues to love Rupert more and more with each visit. The techs are beginning to ask his foster mom when she will finally adopt him as they can't believe anyone would let him go. He is great at the vet's, great at home and great everywhere in between. Rupert will definitely need a very special and extra loving home as there is not a malicious bone in this little dude's body!!!
Rupert had his dental cleaning yesterday, and of course EVERYONE at the clinic loved him. He is known by name and whenever he comes in, the staff comes out to greet him! His dental went smoothly, but the vet did discover a slight urinary tract infection. Fortunately, it should resolve shortly with the help from some cranberries, which Rupert loves to eat anyways!
Aside from (hopefully) taking a day or two to recover from his cleaning, Rupert is busy as ever. He is definitely the charmer in our dog-filled family. In fact, he is also the ONLY dog in the house that has won over our grumpy female beagle. There is no foster or permanent resident (human or dog) at the house that does not like Rupert. We are just thrilled to wake up with him as he always starts our day off with a smile and a tail wag!
Once he has recovered from his dental and UTI, Rupert should be ready to adopt so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for his adoption requirements in the next few weeks!
Rupert had his vet visit today. Everyone at the clinic thought he was the sweetest pug EVER! He welcomed everyone coming into the lobby and took all the poking and prodding better than most dogs. Following his appointment, the vet confirmed that Rupert had a urinary tract infection with a pH level of 7.5 and struvite crystals in the urine itself. In hopes of keeping Rupert from taking unnecessary antibiotics, we are going to be adding cranberries and water to his diet. More specifically, he will have 6 quartered cranberries and lots of water with each meal. Rupert will also get more wet food (his favourite!) to ensure that he actually eats ALL the cranberries. We will keep Rupert on this regiment for 5 days, followed by another visit to the vet for a urinalysis. The hope is that his UTI will have resolved and he won't need any antibiotics; however, if it has not, we will proceed with antibiotics. In addition to the UTI, the vet noticed that Rupert needs a dental so we will be going ahead with that as well.
Overall, Rupert continues to be amazing in his foster home. He does bark when the other dogs bark (he likes to be a supportive family member), but he is usually the first one to stop. He has issues with unfamiliar males coming into the house, but given a chance to sit down and get to know them better, he ends up being a cuddle bug. He continues to be the favourite in a home full of dogs!!!
Rupert is an adorable, 7 year old, fawn pug. He also may look familiar to many Pugalug followers. After three years, Rupert has come back due to marking behaviour in his adoptive home. So far, he's been doing well in his foster home, but his foster mom will be watching him for any recurrence of this behaviour over the next little while. Overall, Rupert appears to be a healthy, happy pug, but he will have his official vet check soon. His foster mom has loved having Rupert back for awhile though and it's like he's never left! Even though he is surrounded by large dogs, cranky dogs and weird cats, he takes everything in stride. He loves food (of course!), is devoted to his humans and is the ultimate velcro pug!
Rupert loves dogs and is desperately trying to befriend the cranky Pomeranian that wants nothing to do with him. Thus, a forever home with other dogs is MUST! Rupert is a charmer and is winning over everyone in his foster home (minus the Pomeranian, of course). He loves to play (LOVES IT!). Everything is a game, from bed making to drying off with a towel. Rupert is the ultimate "adult puppy." One of his favourite games is fetch - running after a ball, sniffing it and getting the human to go pick it up. He also has amazing manners and will sit for any treat. Rupert is up for any adventure and loves to come with us on any errands. Simply put, he is a total love bug and will be a wonderful addition for anyone looking for a hilarious and active pug!
