Rolly has certainly lived up to his name! He is the most hilarious dog I have ever met. We look forward to coming home to his dances when he greets us, we couldn't be happier. While Rolly still has issues with other dogs it doesn't make us love him any less and we will continue to work on his dog issues.

Rolly was picked up today by his new family, Dana and Stephen. They are going to continue to work with him on his socialization and hopefully in the future he will be able to come to some of the Pugalug events. Expect a happy tail in about a week.

Rolly is ready to find his forever home.

Rolly was an only dog before coming into rescue and this is what he is used to. He has had limited exposure to the outside world and therefore is not well socialized. Rolly was sent to Canada from China at nine months of age, so we are not sure what his life was like as a puppy. Rolly has been crated extensively in the last 3 years with minimal attention paid to him; this has created some of his issues. He can get along with my female pug, but he is not good about sharing resources so we feel he would do best as an only dog. Rolly will also need continued training to help him overcome his issues (I believe these can be well managed) and this will be much easier if he can be the sole focus. Rolly is extremely food motivated which helps immensely with training. He will need continued work on his manners around food; this boy is a genius at figuring out how to get food.

Rolly is one of the cutest dogs I have ever seen. It has been remarked several times that he looks like a teddy bear. His short stature does not impede him from jumping up on practically anything and he is great with stairs. Rolly is also a sweet, loving dog with his people. He took a few days to adjust to my home and likely will take some time to adjust to another new home, but once he does he is a lovely boy to have around. He likes to lay down next me when I am at my desk, sleep beside me if I have a nap on the couch and generally (like all Pugs) follows me from room to room. Though Rolly likes attention, he is also good about not pestering you to get it. He is a funny guy that likes to please and if you let it be known what you like, by rewarding it with treats or attention, he learns quickly to do that again. He can be quite charming and silly. He is becoming more playful everyday as he comes out of his shell.

Rolly is what I would call medium energy. He is still active and likes to go for a walk. He would do well with two 30-45 minute walks per day and some one-on-one playtime. He sometimes gets keyed up and does not know how to spend his energy, so he rolls around and won't settle down for a rest but if he is walked regularly (or given the chance to run in a yard) he will happily sit with you on the couch all evening.

The person who adopts Rolly will have to understand that he is incredibly cute and loving but he has issues. That person will have to be committed to continue to work with him so he is more comfortable around other dogs. He may never be great or able to go to a dog park but he has shown some improvement already and I believe he will continue to improve with a lot work and patience. Previous experience with dogs would be preferred but a strong willingness to work with him is the most important factor in a potential adopter for Rolly.

Medically Rolly is coming along well. He had his neuter, dental cleaning and surgery on his nares a week ago and was doing well, but unfortunately he developed a haematoma that needs to be treated with prednisone for two weeks. He didn't need to have his soft palate done which was a relief to me. He had two teeth removed but he is eating fine and is not in any pain. His nostrils are much more open and quite pink but they will get the dark pigment eventually. He has been fully transitioned to Natural Balance LID Venison and Sweet Potato. We are hoping this helps with his itchiness and fur loss.

Now that we know Rolly is healthy; we will begin working on some of his other issues. Rolly has shown some resource guarding around food and the yard. As well, he does not like other dogs. He barks and lunges at them when we meet up with one. Joan Weston was here today to asses him and taught me how to best work with him to help him overcome his problems. He has had almost no socialization or much freedom so he is slightly overwhelmed and over stimulated by all the new things he is encountering. I worked with him this evening and it was a bit bumpy for both of us but we are learning. He will need a fair amount of training and this will have to be continued in his forever home. While Joan felt that Rolly was able to learn and is trainable, the behavioural issues are significant and will require a home that is willing to work with him on them.

On the upside it has been confirmed by Joan that he is incredibly cute, so it is not just me that thinks so. He is also a funny one; he still makes me laugh with his constant soundtrack and his increasing playfulness. While Joan was here he jumped up and sat on the top of the kennel. I think he definitely charmed her with his agility and silly ways. Though we were told Rolly had accidents in his previous home, he fully housetrained here. He does not mark inside and is no longer in a belly band. Rolly likes to meet people, but is not desperate for attention. He has energy, loves to walk but is not too active, this guy likes to rest. He sits quietly to watch TV and enjoys taking naps with me, my dog and my cat. Rolly is very good about being alone as well, he cries for less than 5 minutes when he is put in the bathroom (when I am out or at bedtime).

As well, he does not like big dogs. He barks and lunges at them when we meet up with one. We are going to have Joan Weston assess him and teach me how to best work with him to help him overcome his problems. Rolly continues to charm me with his funny ways. He does so many things that make me laugh. One is jumping on my desk chair with such force that it glides across the floor; he also likes to make it swivel.

Rolly responds to his new name, and wags his tail and wiggles his body when you say "good boy". I am trying to increase his English vocabulary each day. He recognizes our routine, visuals like the harness and Kong, and responds to tone of voice.

He has not had an accident in the house, and does not mark inside (he is in a belly band just to be safe though). He happily goes into the bathroom (where he is gated at night and when I am at work) with a Kong to occupy him. He whines for a short time once he has finished the Kong but does not seem to have any separation anxiety issues. He has a very deep bark, not yappy at all. He will bark at strange noises outside but each day he is barking less as he becomes more familiar with the neighbourhood sounds. Our neighbours are doing renovations, and he is quite good about not barking or being startled by the loud banging going on.

On the down side Rolly has some behaviours that are most likely a result of his limited socialization. He is not fond of big dogs and will bark and lunge if they come too close. If we walk right by, he is better. He also barked at some of the other dogs at the vet but settled down after a couple of minutes. He seems okay with small dogs though. He exhibits some resource guarding with food and the yard. These are things that we are going to work on and hopefully once he is neutered, more comfortable, and has some training he will be better. The food aggression he showed the first two days with Maude has lessened already. He seems a little afraid of toddlers when we are on a walk. He does not like to approach them and basically just stops walking, otherwise he is fine with people petting him but is not overly desperate to get attention. He is little stubborn and if he sets his mind on something, it can be hard to get him to do what you want. Rolly has no interest in toys and does not know how to play with Maude or me. He recently had a bit of a tussle with my cat. I did not see what started it, but he did have Nelson pinned down though didn't hurt him. I suspect Nelson tried to play with Rolly and Rolly did not understand or like it. Nelson is not very dog savvy and thinks they all love to be bitten in the neck.

Rolly went to the vet yesterday and had a thorough check up. He was very good, just sitting quietly while being examined. My vet thinks he has a wonderful disposition. He is a nice healthy weight at 22 lbs. He has some very bad skin issues that are causing the poor guy a lot of discomfort. He is very itchy, has patchy fur loss and some scabs from scratching too much. His feet are particularly bad. He has been having a very hard time walking outside and his pads sometimes bleed. All of this is likely allergies (he had previously been tested for a lot of things -- all of which came back negative).The next step will be to find out what he is allergic to. He is being transitioned off the food he came with and onto a grain-free, single protein one. He has been prescribed an anti-biotic for 42 days and that should help with his skin. He also has very small nares and they will be opened by laser surgery while he is being neutered. His breathing is very loud and he constantly pants. He is scheduled for his neuter, nares, dental and possibly soft palate surgery next Wednesday. He also has a minor luxating patella on the right.

I'll let everyone know the results of his tests and how he is after his surgery.

Rolly is a 4.5 year old pug mix. Probably pug/pekinese. He is an owner surrender. He will need to be neutered and has some itchy skin issues which we hope diet will cure. So far, he has gotten along well with his foster sister, Maude, and his foster feline brother, Nelson. We'll update you on his progress as he settles in.
