Shanti - 4 year old female

Shanti's Happy Tail

We have come to see Shanti as a gift, she is a wonderful spirit wrapped up in a lovely, chubby little pug package. We fell in love with her instantly (who wouldn't?), but it took her a little longer to surrender all of her love and affection to us - about two feedings (haha).

Now that she knows she is home, she has settled in well, and is happy. She has a nice backyard, two dog parks nearby, and a nice couch to cuddle on. There are more stairs than she would like, but that only slows her down a little. We were a bit concerned when she didn't do any business for over 24 hours, but she has since opened the floodgates, so to speak, and we are now accustomed to her particular schedule. She didn't really understand all the fuss, but we nearly threw a party after her first poop!

Thanks to her Foster Dad Larry, Shanti has been shown what a loving home is, and has come to see our home as hers. She doesn't seem disturbed at all by her adventures in life, and has established a bond with us that is strong and heartfelt. Even as I type this, her big brown pug eyes are peeking over the edge of her doggy bed at me. Although it has only been a few days now, Shanti feels like she has always been our dog.

We thank Pugalug Pug Rescue, and especially Larry St. Aubin for taking such good care of her and making sure that she and all pugs are given the same love and consideration that they share with us.

P.S. Shanti is working on developing a good relationship with her brother and sister, our two black cats Lucky and Chancellor. Although they may take a little longer to warm up to her than we did, and Chancellor has moved into the backyard in protest, we have faith that her gentle loving ways will eventually melt their hearts too…hopefully before winter.

Shanti settles in to her new backyeard

Shanti is ready for adoption - August 23rd

Well, little Shanti has had quite the busy week for a foster pug. She went with us up to the Red Umbrella Inn in Minden where she went swimming at the Doggie Beach, canoeing on 12 Mile Lake, long leisurely walks along the lakeshore, basking in the sun and running in the grass.

When we got back she went in to Usher Animal Hosptial for her spaying, nail clipping, dental work and microchip placement. There were no complications and she was soon up and about, charming the staff with her friendly smile and welcoming wiggle. She had to have 1 tooth removed but otherwise she is healthy and will soon be ready for her new home. She will be resting for the next few days, taking her anti-biotics and letting he incision heal.

Adopter Requirements Shanti could fit into just about any household. She has a pleasant and easy going temperament. She gets along with people, children, other dogs and cats. She loves to cuddle up close for a head part or chin scratch. She is crate trained and house trained but may have 1 or 2 accidents on her first few days in a new home.

Foster Update - August 14

Shanti went back to the vet for a second look at determing her heat cycle. He swelling is way down and the swab indicates she is off her cycle. The swab did contain some bacteria that was not there previously so we have scheduled her spaying for August 22nd.

Otherwise she continues to transition easily. She is friendly with both other dogs and people we meet on our walks. She has bonded closely with me and shows lots of affection when I'm around. We continue to work on her house training and she goes to the door when she needs to eliminate. I'm working at getting her to do her business on our morning or evening walks. She went to Surfin' Pug this past Sunday and was quite good on her own - meeting and greeting people and pugs wherever she went at Petopia

She is now on a raw diet which she enjoys. I've been supplemening this with Solid Gold Sea Meal and Dr. Maggie's Soybean Oil for her omega's. In addition, she has been getting bones to chew on (beef marrow, brisket and bison). A lot of the yellow on her teeth has been cleaned off and her gums are looking healthier. She will not need any dental when she goes in for her spaying.

Foster Update - July 22nd

Well the good news is Shanti has settled in like a velvet glove. She integrated well with Dante, Dublin and Odin. And it did not take her long to begin to work that puggy charm, climbing on my lap for hugs and slurps. It appears that she has been very well cared for and is used to receiving attention. She did have 2 accidents, both in the morning so I think it is just her having to settle in to our regular rhythm. But she has claimed a spot near the computer workstation which has me pretty much surronded as you can see

And the surprise news is I think she is going into a heat cycle (at least if Odin's sudden interest in her is any indication). But not to worry because there won't be any little Odin's on the horizon. She is starting to swell in her genital area so looks like we will have to put off the spaying for awhile. I've changed the date of her initial checkup for July 26th

We did spend the day at the 613 pugalug fundraiser and Shanti spent her time between sitting in the shade and cozyint up to the other pugs. By the end of the day, she was one, tired little pug who could not keep her eyes open as she sat on my lap

Shanti - Introduction, July 17

Shanti (Shawn-Tea) is Sanskrit for Peace. She was found as a stray in North Toronto and taken to Toronto Animal Services, held for the 10 days and then they contacted us for placement. She is intact and by the looks of her teats, has given birth to quite a few litters. Without knowing her background, I'm assuming she was used for breeding in a puppymill or backyard breeding and then abandoned (no one came to claim her during the 10 days at TAS).

She is an energetic, playful and an easy going pug. Friendly with people and other dogs (there was no problem integrating her with Dante, Dublin and Odin). She was anxious at first but settled into the bed beside me and calmed down after an hour or so.

Health wise she appears to be in very good shape. The vet at TAS reportes her eyes, ears and skin are good. The teeth are a little yellow but I'll have Dr. Usher check them when she goes in for checkup. She had her first set of vaccinations/deworming on July 6th.

She is scheduled for her checkupa and next set of vaccinations on August 8th. On August 13th she is scheduled for her spaying.
